We're Looking Forward to....

…Getting back into our lovely studio after a long time away!

When we moved into The Gantry at Here East we felt that this was our practice's true home; a place designed and located for optimal creativity and productivity.

The studio, designed by Hawkins Brown Architects, has the office upstairs and a makers space below where we test some of our ideas before they go to site. This is always fun.

Apart from a brief interval last September it has been almost a year away, isolated apart from a steady stream of Teams calls. Now the talk amongst our team is of what plants we are going to be growing and who will be joining us for drinks and pizza on the terrace.

Will it be you?

With over 12,000 votes cast the Darc awards 2019 winning an award is certainly something to be proud of. Not only are the voting figures impressive, but so is the voting process. Peer judged by lighting designers from around the world, only the projects that receive the highest votes from practicing lighting designers are awarded.

International Presbyterian Church Ealing picked up a second award for lighting design and everyone in the studio is very humbled and thrilled to have been chosen as a winner!

18 Degrees is delighted to announce that we have been crowned the winners of a coveted Lighting Design Award at this year’s ceremony. The awards, known as the LDAs, recognise the standout projects that represent the best of the lighting industry across a range of sectors, and we took home the gong for Heritage Project of the Year. Winning for our work at the International Presbyterian Church in Ealing, we were honoured to be awarded the top prize in such a competitive category. Our design at the church focused on enhancing the detailing of the architecture and wealth of materials with the space.

Christopher Knowlton, Director and Designer at 18 Degrees, said:

"2019 has so far proved to be a highly successful year for 18 Degrees, and to win a coveted LDA is another huge achievement.

"We're so proud of our work at the International Presbyterian Church so it's wonderful news that it has been recognised as the standout project of the year across the heritage sector.

"Congratulations to all of the other winners and shortlisted entries. "

Being Human - Christopher Talks Human Centric Lighting in the ILP's May issue of Lighting Journal

ILP Lighting Journal May 2019.png

Human-centric lighting has become a bit of a catch-all buzzword in recent years, especially in relation to lighting in the workplace. But what does it really mean? Is it just about changing the colour temperature of luminaires from warm to cool? Or is it just another buzzword used to sell more lights?

Hold the front page – we’re the headline act in February/March issue of Arc

Here at 18 Degrees we were absolutely thrilled when the latest issue of Arc landed on our desks. Not only have we secured a staggering 8-page feature on our lighting design for the Mayflower Theatre, Southampton, our project also earned the most sought after spot of Arc; the front cover.

Using a wide array of stunning photography which showcases the theatre’s lighting beautifully, the feature walks the reader through every element of our design. Our director, Christopher Knowlton is quoted extensively in the article, which brings the story of our lighting scheme to life.

There were a number of fantastic projects in the February/March issue of Arc, so it was an honour to secure the front page with our work at Mayflower Theatre. We feel it is demonstrative of the love and passion we put into this project.

You can see the latest issue of Arc here and read all about this magnificent project on pages 60-70.
